What made you become part of the Oathbound team?

I had this western werewolf idea for an RPG that I decided would be a good comic book.  I met Paul we started talking westerns and realized werewolves weren’t the way to go. So I thought about a “Dungeons & Dragons” style western and how neat that would be to see, Paul eventually agreed and here we are.

What was your first experience with comic books?

Wow. I was a kid maybe 5 or 6 and couldn’t read yet. My dad was a WWII veteran and used to buy Spider-man and Hulk comic books and read them to me. It was a great way to spend time with my dad, considering he was in his 60s when I was born. I was hooked that early. It was Mike Mignola’s Hulk in the 80s that I first read for myself.  I looked at that one book over and over.

Can you tell the folks at home what a writer does and why it’s so important to a comic?

Basically I plan out what the audience is seeing and what the characters are saying in the panels. On a deeper level it’s my job to manipulate the emotions of the audience to want to continue to read the book through the plot, dialogue and  characters. I work closely with Paul to make sure that our two parts compliment one another, helping lend strength to the storytelling.

What are some of your favorite comics? What comics (if any) do you currently read and what comics would you suggest to others?

I have so many! I really love : Harrow County by Cullen Bunn & Tyler Crook on Dark Horse. Rumble by John Arcudi and James Harren on image.  Pretty Deadly by KellySue DeConnick & Emma Rios. Power man & Iron Fist by David Walker & Sanford Greene.  I’d strongly recommend any of those books to anyone trying to get into comics as well as Blood Feud by Cullen Bunn & Drew Moss.

What other (if any) comic book series/projects are you involved with and at what capacity?

I’m a co-writer with Bob Frantz on Elvis vs. Aliens with artist Rachel Ordway, I’m a co-creator of ” The Ballad of Badass Bill” with Artist Drew Moss . Bob and I have a few more ideas we are working together, we’ve found we compliment each other’s styles well .  I’ve also got something in the works with Oathbound cover artist Hoyt Silva that should be out later this year.
